Oxidative Stress and Antioxidants

Elderberries are known as “Nature’s Medicine Chest” for their diversity of health benefits including their antioxidant rich properties.

Wondering why are antioxidants important? If you feel fatigued, experience brain fog, joint pain, headaches, poor immune function, and digestive disorders it may be signs of oxidative stress and stored toxins.

Antioxidants help detox our body from harmful free radicals that produce unwanted muscle and joint pain, fatigue, digestive issues, and more.

Signs & Symptoms of Oxidative Stress

WHAT IS OXIDATION?

The process of oxidation happens as our body metabolizes the oxygen that we breathe, and our cells produce energy (glucose) from it. This process also produces free radicals –molecules that interact with the molecules within our cells resulting in damage (or stress) to nearby cells. Oxidation also occurs when the immune system is fighting off an infection and creating inflammation and when exposed to pollutants, pesticides, and smoke. It also increases when we are physically and/or emotionally stressed.
In fact, there are millions of processes taking place in our body at any one moment that can result in oxidation.

WHAT IS OXIDATIVE STRESS?
Free radicals are normal and necessary to some degree. In addition to causing some damage, they also stimulate repair. It is only when too many free radicals are produced, that they overwhelm the repair processes and become unhealthy. That is what we call oxidative stress.
SIGNS OF OXIDATIVE STRESS
Oxidative stress can cause:
 1. Fatigue, always feel tired?
 2. Memory loss and/or brain fog
 3. Muscle and/or joint pain
 4. Wrinkles and grey hair
 5. Decreased eyesight
 6. Headaches and sensitivity to noise
 7. Poor immune function
 8. Digestive disorders

Restore Energy & Release Toxins

Experts suggest that we detox twice a year with an antioxidant rich diet and supporting stress reducing practices, once in the new year after the holidays and once in late spring in preparation for warmer weather and increased activity.

HOW TO REDUCE OXIDATIVE STRESS

A SIMPLE SPRING DETOX PLAN
No matter what you to do avoid them, you are going to be exposed to some toxins and stress, however, you can choose higher quality nontoxic alternatives to commercial household cleaners, personal products, and candles and increase the number of antioxidants you have in your system either by helping your body make more or by consuming them in foods or supplements.

ANTIOXIDANT-RICH FOODS
Choose organic foods when possible (they are clean and not chemically grown or treated with pesticides).

Potential sources of free radicals in our environment include cigarette smoke, air pollution, excessive sun exposure, industrial chemicals, radiation and pesticides.

Talk to your holistic practitioner about supporting supplements for liver health and consider healthier toxic free alternatives to household cleaners, perfumes, candles, and personal care products. Cumulative exposure to free radicals from these types of sources can lead to cell and tissue damage caused by oxidative stress.
